Saving Mr. Banks

Do you know the lady who plays Miss P.L Travers, a certain Emma Thompson? I certainly haven’t heard of her, I haven’t seen any of her movies, and I haven’t seen her until now. BUT…. Google tells me that I’m wrong. As it turns out, I’ve seen Men in Black, I am Legend, and Harry Potter (Professor Trelawney) – all movies where she appears.

You know what, right now, my biggest damn confusion is how the hell did I miss out on knowing such a brilliant actress!

So, let’s get started on Saving Mr. Banks – does he get saved, how does he get saved, and does he rob the bank…. Crap, wait a moment, that’s not what the movie is about! It is about Walt Disney… I think.

Saving Mr. Banks is directed by John Lee Hancock and stars Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson.

Story

This is a movie of how the magical and wonderful film, Marry Poppins, came to the screen. As the story goes, P.L Travers has been in talks with Walt Disney for the past 20 years to get the movie on screen. And….. finally, she freaking agrees to head to LA (or was it Chicago? ) to work with the script team, and if and ONLY IF she is satisfied, then  will she sign away the film rights.

I thought this Movie was about Walt Disney

I have never seen a movie with Walt Disney, the man, who you keep hearing stories about. The magic man. Considering that there has never been a biopic on the man who created the most powerful media houses today, I assumed this would be one. Rather, Saving Mr. Banks is a tale of the tug of war between a writer and movie maker, a micro-manager and a visionary, and I loved every bit of it. This is where the beautiful dynamics of Tom Hanky and Emmy Thompson plays out. The relationship between Walt Disney and P.L Travers is harsh, un-trustful, bumpy, and they can’t even decide whether to be on a first name basis or a Mr-Miss basis. For example:

Disney: “Travers-”

Tavers: “NO! Not Travers. Miss. P.L Travers!”

(Lolkein: Looks like they both are in Looohhhuuvveee!! NOT)

Mary Poppins, Saving Mr. Banks,  and Daughter of a Father

Is that a long sub-heading? Damn it! I tried to make it shorter, but it just didn’t happen. All those points ….  they are all connected. And that’s where the brilliance of the movie comes in. Saving Mr. Banks is not about Walt Disney! Half way through the film, and my confusion miraculously clears up (sometimes when I’m lucky, the confusion lifts off from me; must be the Mary Poppins magic!). The film is actually about P.L Travers and why Marry Poppins and her stories are so real, so close to her heart and so difficult for her to hand over to someone else.

P.L Travers

What can I say about her? She is the main character of the film

Annoying

Stiff

A bitch

I really can’t say who she is…. she’s complicated. This is all thanks to Emma Thompson’s brilliant acting. But as the story dwells more into it, you learn so much on the whys! Why is she annoying, stiff and a bitch.

And I love the way John Lee Hancock, the director, has subtly shown loneliness. It adds so much depth to P.L Travers.

MisHistory

This is a historical film and like any film, it has taken liberties to the actual event. BUT, a story is only good as the reality and while few changes can be forgiven, I will definitely question when so many, many changes have been made! Well, it is not for me to decided and say, “This is not a movie to watch because it did not stick to history”, but you must know.

Behold a story about a writer, her father, her dreams and her Marry Poppins who rescued the family.

Is this a movie that will make your teary eyed? Will it make you angry at the bitch-iness of LP and her “British sophistication”? Will you feel the jitters of Disney and the Mary Poppin magic? Or is it just a heart-warming tale?

Beats the hell out of me, I can’t decide…. No, on second thought:

I really don’t think I can decide.

Watch it and TELL ME! One may call Saving Mr. Banks as a biopic on P.L Travers. What I will call it is a wonderful, jittery tale of a writer and her fears and wants.

Now, go and watch it and tell me – Is P.L Travers a bitch? Why isn’t this movie about Saving Walt Disney? And who really is Mr. Banks, because he really does work at the Bank?
