'It Follows' resurrects the horror genre

Don’t. Look. Back.

I think horror movies are the best kind of movies. There I said it. However I also know that it’s probably the most overlooked genre because of its cliches (like black guy getting killed in the beginning, girl wanting to investigate the source of the noise) and blah, blah.. But I’d still say that there is nothing I love more, than a good, satisfying, creepy <insert more adjectives that I’d rather not use> horror movie.

So before I delve into what I really think about ‘It Follows’, here’s what I think has been really happening in the genre that I love the most, for the past few years.

Well unless you’re James Wan, who can get past all of those cliches with the classic Conjuring, or you’re Alfred Hitchcock, who really doesn’t need a single thing mentioned above to terrify you, you’re really in a soup.

So when I got the tickets to watch IT FOLLOWS (I never miss a chance to watch a horror movie), the only thing I expected was the one liner on the poster I had seen-

‘One of the Most Striking American Horror Film in Years’

“Well, gentlemen,” I said. “You had my curiosity, and now you have my attention.”

One word of advice:

The next I knew, the lights went off in the cinema hall, and thus began one and a half hour of pure horror that is every bit original and unique.

The Plot (simply put):
A young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after getting involved in a ‘sexual encounter’.

Sexual Encounter? Sounds like a B-Grade horror flick right? But…

The phrase ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ = ‘Don’t judge a movie by its synopsis’ in the world of movies (only in the case of Chappie which I still can’t get out of my head.)

The movie dives into the tense atmosphere straightaway, and every subsequent scene accelerates with so much pace, you’ll start wondering if it’s a really a horror movie or a thrilling chase sequence.

Yes, the movie stays true to its name. IT. FUCKING. FOLLOWS!

I won’t get into the details of the plot, but the story follows a young woman and her story about her trying to escape “it”.

It’s an unnaturally terrifying film that breathes horror into you with its ups and downs! Whether she manages to escape “it” or succumb to “it” will only be known at the end, but the intensity of each scene is just perfect for horror-hungry minds.

Oh! And unlike any other horror movie, ‘It Follows’ has NO JUMP SCARES  (BOOO!). And it still manages to creep the shit out of you! The last time I was this freaked out was when I heard ‘Sherlock’ didn’t have a 4th episode. *bad joke alert*

Now back to the part that really got this movie going.

SOUNDTRACK!!!

It’s original and haunting. ‘Disasterpiece’ has done more than a fabulous job with it. It’s a perfect blend of how to use sound in sync with your screenplay to come out victorious. There are so many unusual elements used for the soundtrack, that it might make you wonder if the guy who made it was tripping on everything that he ever got his hand on.

The music is an ode to the classic horror genre of the 80’s, being inspired by the legendary style of musical composition heard in John Carpenter’s films (especially Halloween). Instead of the jump scares the movie gets you with sudden piano notes or sharp screeches.

All in all, IT FOLLOWS is an honest and genuine attempt to revive the horror genre with a screenplay that plays out terrifically in every way a horror movie is supposed to be played. A lot of people told me they didn’t find it “that” scary. My only answer to them is – “When did zombies start getting scared?” See what I did there?

Trust me when I say this. I have seen a lot of horror movies – the good and bad alike. I have even seen movies like Primeval and Wrong Turn in the hope of finding that perfect blend, and yet, I can say with confidence that I have never EVER been terrified the way I was when I saw IT FOLLOWS.

Here’s a little chart to help you understand what I mean (The chart may differ from person to person… lol). “It Follows’ is the last one, in case you were wondering.

Without further ado, watch IT FOLLOWS if you still haven’t. It’s a breath of fresh air in the genre that will satisfy all your horror cravings and leave you gasping for more.

My current favorite and a future classic without a doubt!
